| History | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Ghana's
educational system has undergone a metamorphosis since independence.From
the British styled educational system of kindergarten,primary to secondary school
education culminating in the taking of Ordinary (' O ')Level & Advanced
(' A ')Level right through to the university level, changes have occured
primarily in the educational system at the secondary school level where O &
A levels have been replaced by the J.S.S (junior secondary school) &
S.S.S (senior secondary school) exams which are more geared towards hands-on-training
unlike the former where students where more geared towards the reading of the
abstract which had more to do with memorising stuff than anything else. Students of today are trained to be more prepared to take on jobs at any stage of the educational ladder than they where before. With the increase in private tertiary institutions to join the 5 government universities, the perennial student low intake into tertiary institutions has decreased somewhat though a lot more has to be done to ensure that this problem is definitely a thing of the past. Ghana has primary & secondary schools dotted across its 10 geographical regions with the bulk concentrated in the south.Every year between 150,00 to 300,000 students at various levels of the secondary school ladder take examinations to either go to S.S.S or University.Pass rates are between 50% to 60%.Since the inception of the J.S.S concept in 1987 to date, students have had it a bit tough since the requisite materials for their training is not readily available.e.g Tools for students who are mechanically inclined are difficult to come by & even more difficult to get in their numbers e.t.c. A number of publicly spirited individuals are trying to rally the support of corporate bodies & individuals to reverse this trend.Please read on...... |

guardians or which part of the country they live. He said this when he addressed a fund-raising dinner dance in aid of the fund at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra on Saturday night. More than ¢220 million was realised at the fund-raiser which saw a cross-section of society including the President,Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor. Among the donors were the Ga Traditional Council who |

¢10 million. The President who was the special guest of honour said that the fund is of a national dimension & therefore enjoys the goodwill of the people.He further went on to say that he appreciated the support of the chiefs towards the fund. Other speakers at the fund-raiser included Oyeeman Wereko Ampem II, Chief of Amanokrom & Gyaasehene of Akuapem & Professor Florence Dolphyne,Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the fund. According to available statistics, out of the 247,699 candidates presented nationwide this year for the Basic Certificate Examination, 149,611passed obtainig aggregates between 6 & 30 for their best 6 subjects.This paints a non-flattering picture of the educational system in the country hence the need for the institution of such a fund to help equip students & schools with the necessary tools for success. |
