Barclays Africa wins coveted award.

Barclays Africa has been named the Best Bank in Africa by the prestigious international magazine, The Banker at an awards ceremony held in London.
The award was made to the bank for its committment to the continent & pan-African expansion programme.
Barclays plc also received 2 awards at the ceremony;Best UK Bank & Best Capital Raising Bank.
The bank has been active in Africa for more than 100 years & has full retail & corporate banking facilities in Botswana, Kenya, Egypt,Ghana,the Seychelles,Tanzania, Uganda, Mauritius Zimbabwe & Zambia.It has 250 branches in Africa,200 ATMs & 1.5 million accounts & has a community support program.

The President of Ghana,Mr Kufuor has arrived in the UK for a six-day official visit at the invitation of British Prime Minister, Tony Blair.He was accompanied by his wife,First Lady,Theresa Kufuor as well as the ministers of Foreign Affairs & Media Relations.He is to hold bilateral discussions with Mr Blair at Chequeis.

One of the main talking points would be British Aid to Ghana,as well as support for the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries( HIPC) Initiative,for which the British Government is an enthusiastic supporter.
Sources have said that Britain is likely to take the opportunity to annouce increases in its bilateral aid to Ghana & would also pronounce a number of debt relief measures resulting from the country's adoption of HIPC.He is also expected to meet a number of British Investors to try & woo them to Ghana.He is expected back in the country on Friday.

8 envoys get instruments of commission

Kenya Airways Flies to Accra
(As part of airline transport system.)

President Kufuor, last friday presented instruments of commission to eight Ambassadors & High Commissioners
designate at the State House, Accra.
They swore the oath of allegiance, the oath of secrecy & the official oath after which they signed the Official Oath Book.
Addressing the new envoys, the President asked them to see their appointments as a challenge to bring in more investors to help transform the economy of the country.In reminding them about the complex nature of International Diplomacy, he asked them not to look at diplomatic appointment as an opportunity for attending parties & dinners but an opportunity to use ones wits to attract investors into the country.

Kenya Airways has introduced 2 weekly flights to Accra to be operatedevery Monday & Saturday.
Beginning today,the airline will start operating direct flights from Nairobi using a new Boeing 737-700.
"The decision to fly to Accra was motivated by rising market demand.There is a lot of demand for flights between West Africa & the rest of Africa as well as Asia via Nairobi" says the commercial director, Mr. Bram Stellar.

The airline has expanded its route from network with a view to improve its market position in Africa & worldwide.

Network development has furthur been enhanced through co-operation with other African airlines like Air Tanzania, Air Malawi & Air Botswana.Other destinations in West Africa include Douala, Lagos, Yaounde & Abidjan.
Recently Kenya Airways was voted "African Airline of the Year" by African Aviation-Africa's Aviation Industry journal at the "Open Skies" for Africa Aviation Conference" held in Washington DC, U.S.A.

Ghana to host made in U.S.A show.
Ghana is to host a Made in USA trade show between November 26th & 29th next year.This show would assemble about 300 exhibitors who will showcase their products during the period.Apart from Information technology,Mining Equipment e.t.c to be showcased, others like home appliances, chemical & cleaning products are also included.
Alhaji Banda returns allowances
The Executive Director of the Antrak Group of Companies, Alhaji Asoma Banda has returned a cheque for ¢1,278,750 which is his monthly allowance as a member of the board of the Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority.
He has therefore renewed his appeal to other members of boards of state-owned enterprises to forgo their allowances & other perks as their support for efforts to bring the country out of its present & help take it into its future.
In a statement issued in Accra over the weekend , Alhaji Banda pointed out that the global economy is weak & all Ghanaians must endeavour to show the international community their preparedness to help the government resuscitate the economy.He asked the government to clearly & properly define the role & functions of board chairmen & members of government boards to avoid ambiguity.
He also asked that in appointing members of boards,government must consider people with entrepreneurial & managerial acumen & skills particularly those from the private sector who will not demand any payment of allowances stressing also that there was no justification for government employees sitting on such boards to draw sitting allowances.
Government halts BAF
The Government has said that it would discontinue the Business Assistance Fund(BAF) set up in 1996 to help promote domestic business & would instead put its place a Ghana Investment Fund(GIF) into which monies from a variety of sources will be channelled to help realise the opportunities for which the BAF was set up.This wsa disclosed by Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Minister of Trade & Industry in an interview in Accra after a tour of industries in the Northern Region.he said that the decision follows the failure of BAF to achieve its objectives.
