The North is the largest region in Ghana & another granary of the nation. Our farmers produce substantial harvests of rice, maize, millet, sorghum & other food crops & because of its size, visitors travelling through the region will discover distinct changes from the landscapes & architecture of the southern regions. As travellers range furhur north, the distinctive traditional mud-walled villages, ( that are similar to those found in Mali & Burkina Faso ) & adapt so well to the demanding climate of the region provide interesting side trips. The Northern Region is the home of Mole National Park (160 km west of Tamale) a rich & unspoilt habitat for elephant, buck & lion. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon is the best time to see the game as they come down to the waterholes to drink.

Tamale, the capital of the region is easily reached by car from Accra (8 hours) or by air
(about 45 minutes) & is a good base from which to explore the region which is full of history & natural attractions. Not to be missed is the 13th century Larabanga Mosque, a splendid example of the Sudanese style of architecture. Close by, the legend of a mystery stone would be explained by local villagers.

At Yipabongo, excavation work has revealed terracotta artefacts & traces of the 9th century Koma people.

Part of the ancient slave route passed close to Nalerigu where a defensive wall built to protect the village from raiders can still be seen. At Salaga, the site of a famous trans-Saharan slave market, further vestiges of this infamous trade remain.Relics of the colonial era are also encountered at Yendi ,with its 19th century German cemetry. This is also the site of the grave of Babatu one of the most famous slave raiders.

The festivals of the Northern Region are full of pageantry & showmanship. Festive drumming & dancing make these spectacles events not to be missed by the tourist who wants to appreciate the distinctive culture of the north.
Mole National Park
4840 sq km of savannah & rocky outcrops that are home to 93 species of mammal including herds of elephant, buck & small plains game. The occasional lion & leopard can be seen resting after a kill & the range of birdlife (approx. 300 species) is refreshing.

Larabanga Mosque
A 13th century Mosque believed to be first built by Moorish traders, it is one of the holiest sites in Ghana. Its distinctive facade has been widely photographed.

Daboya

89 km west of Tamale,Daboya is a 16th century town from the Gonja kingdom & a famous source of hand-made textiles.

Nalerigu Defence Wall

Said to be built in the 16th century to protect Nalerigu (120 km from 'Bolga') from raiders, this has now been recognised as part of the Slave Route.

Salaga
The slave route is recognised at Salaga, where the trans-saharan caravans paused in Salaga market.Leg pegs can still be seen in the market place.

Yendi

96km east of Tamale, Yendi was part of a 19th century Germans who died in battle with Dagomaba people are buried in the cemetry.The grave of the slave raider Babatu is said to be near here.
